Updated 23 October 2026 at 7:35 pm. Source: IBJA (India Bullion and Jewellers Association), the rate the Indian trade quotes. It is a reference rate, not our buying rate, and not an offer.
What the published rate actually is
The rate quoted in the news is for pure gold, 24k, 99.9%, traded in quantity between people in the trade. It is a reference price for a commodity, not an offer to buy your chain.
Two more things get folded into the number you see. City rates differ because of local taxes and local demand. And some sites quote with GST included and some without, which alone can move the figure by a few percent.
Your jewellery is not 24k
Pure gold is too soft to wear, so jewellery is alloyed. The mark stamped on the piece tells you how much of it is gold.
| Karat | Mark | Gold content | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k | 999 | 99.9% | Coins and bars. Almost never jewellery. |
| 22k | 916 | 91.6% | The usual purity for Indian gold jewellery. |
| 18k | 750 | 75.0% | Common in lighter and stone-set pieces. |
| 14k | 585 | 58.5% | Often in imported or fashion jewellery. |
| 9k | 375 | 37.5% | Rare in India, more common in the UK. |
Ask us for today's buying rate
We will tell you the live per-gram number, whether or not you decide to sell.
Three questions to ask any buyer
- What purity did the machine read, and can I see the display?
- What is the weight, and can I watch the scale being zeroed?
- What per-gram rate are you using, and can you write the sum down?
A buyer who answers all three is showing you the calculation. Here is how ours works.
Questions about the rate
Why is there no live rate on this page?
Because the rate moves through the day and a number printed on a page is wrong within hours. Call or message us and you will be told the rate we are buying at that moment.
Why do different websites show different rates for the same day?
They are quoting different things. Some show a jewellers' association rate, some show an international spot price converted to rupees, some include GST and some do not, and city rates differ because of local taxes and demand. None of them is the price a buyer pays you.
Is the rate per gram or per 10 grams?
Indian rates are usually quoted per 10 grams, and sometimes per gram. Check which one you are reading before comparing two numbers, because it is an easy way to be out by a factor of ten.
Will I get back what I paid for my jewellery?
Usually not the full amount, because part of what you paid was making charges and GST rather than gold. If gold has risen a lot since you bought it, the gold value can still put you ahead. The only way to know is to have the piece tested and weighed.
