A broken chain, a single earring or a bent bangle is paid at the same rate per gram as the same gold unbroken. Cash for gold is worked out from weight and purity, and a break changes neither. We are in Noida Extension (Greater Noida West), and pickups cover Delhi NCR.

Is cash for gold on a broken chain paid at a lower rate?

No. The rate is set for the purity of the gold, not for the shape it is in. A 22 karat chain in two pieces has the same purity as the chain before it snapped. A 22 karat chain is also the same gold whether it is whole, knotted or tangled.

The gold in your drawer is going to be melted. That is true of whole pieces too. Nobody buying purana sona is planning to wear it, so a clasp that has gone or a bangle that has bent out of shape does not cost the buyer anything extra.

If a buyer tells you that broken pieces fetch a lower rate, ask which part of the calculation changed. Purity did not. Weight did not. What changed is the story they are telling you about your gold.

What is set aside before the gold is weighed?

Only what is not gold. Before weighing, we set these aside:

  • Stones and beads. We do not buy stones, so they are removed from the count. Gold is weighed without them.
  • Enamel, lac and thread. Meena work and the lac filling in some bangles are not gold. The post on stones, meena and clasps explains how this changes the weight.
  • Dirt and loose fittings. A chain that sat in a cloth bag for years can carry lint and grit. It comes off before the scale.

Nothing is set aside because a piece is damaged. A snapped link, a missing screw-back or a crushed bangle stays in the weight. Every gram of gold you bring is counted.

What is actually paid for?

Three inputs, the same three as for any other piece:

  1. Weight of the gold, in grams, on the scale in front of you.
  2. Purity, read on the karatmeter while you watch. A stamp helps, but the reading decides.
  3. The day's rate for that purity. You can see where it comes from in why the published rate is not your payout.

That is the whole of it. Making charges, design and the original bill do not enter. The figure for your pieces is worked out at the counter once they are tested. We do not print an estimate here, because without testing it would be a guess.

For a broken piece, the test has one extra step. A chain that has been repaired before may have been soldered with different gold at the join, so we test at more than one point. If the main body reads 22 karat, that is the purity the body is paid at. You see each reading as it is taken. The steps are in how a karatmeter reading is taken.

Why does a buyer say broken pieces are worth less?

Because it works. Someone holding a snapped chain often feels the piece has lost its value, and a buyer can use that feeling. Three things you may hear:

  • "It is damaged, so I will take a cut." There is no cut in the calculation for damage. It is a deduction added by the buyer.
  • "A single earring has no pair." A pair matters to a shopper. It does not matter to the melting pot. One earring is paid by its weight and purity.
  • "The shape has to be fixed." Fixing is done after buying, and that is the buyer's work on gold they now own.

None of this means every shop does it. It means the question to ask is simple: is the rate for this piece the same as for a whole piece of the same purity? If the answer is yes, you are being paid for the metal. If the answer is a long explanation, you are being paid for the story.

The same check helps when two shops quote different numbers on the same gold. See why two shops quote different rates.

Should I get it repaired before I sell?

Usually not. A repair costs money and adds a little solder, and a buyer pays for the gold in the piece, not for the work in it. If you wanted to keep the chain and wear it again, that is a different decision, and repairing it is right. If you have already decided to sell, bring it as it is.

Please do not try to straighten a bent bangle or join a chain yourself with heat. You may lose a small amount of gold or change how it reads on the test.

Very light pieces, like a single nose pin or a broken clasp, follow the same logic and are covered in selling very light gold pieces. For an earring on its own, see what broken pieces and single earrings are worth.

What should I bring when I come for cash for gold?

Bring every piece, including the small fragments. A link that came off the chain and a loose hook are gold, and they belong in the same weighing. Put them in a small envelope so none are lost on the way. Our post on carrying gold safely covers the trip.

Also bring your photo ID. The list is in what to bring when you sell gold. You do not need a bill, and you do not need a matching piece.

If you would like to see how the process works before deciding, the page for cash for gold in Greater Noida West sets out each step, and our Noida Extension locality page has the address. If you are asking "gold bechna hai, but is it worth the trip for one broken piece?", read gold bechna hai or call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and describe what you have. Nothing has to happen today. You can take your time, ask, and decide after you have seen the weight and the reading.

Questions people ask

Do broken gold chains get a lower rate per gram? No. The rate depends on purity and the day's rate, and a break changes neither. Ask any buyer to show you the rate for your purity and compare it with the rate for a whole piece.

Can I sell a single earring without the other one? Yes. A single earring is weighed and tested like any other gold. Its pair does not change the rate, because the gold is paid by weight and purity.

What is set aside before my broken gold is weighed? Only the parts that are not gold, such as stones, enamel, lac and dirt. We do not buy stones. If you are unsure about a piece, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and ask before you travel.
