The weighing scale should be visible, and it should read zero before your gold goes on it. The purity, weight and rate should add up to a final figure that is written down, not just spoken. And the buyer should ask for your ID, because that is what a legitimate transaction looks like. If any one of these is missing, that alone is reason to look elsewhere.
We are a gold buyer in Noida Extension, Greater Noida West, and we run pickups across Delhi NCR for people who cannot travel to a counter. Whether you visit one shop or five, these four checks apply the same way — they are about how the shop works, not what it pays.
Does the karatmeter screen face you?
A karatmeter tests the purity of your gold — whether it reads close to 916 (22 karat) or lower, for lower-karat pieces. The machine has a small screen that shows the reading. In a shop that has nothing to hide, that screen faces you while the test runs, so you see the number appear at the same moment the buyer does.
If the machine is turned away, or the buyer reads the number and tells you a figure afterward, you have no way to check it. Ask them to turn the screen toward you before the test starts. This takes a few seconds and no shop should have a reason to refuse. We cover exactly how this test is done, step by step, in how a karatmeter reading is taken.
Can you see the scale, and does it read zero first?
Weight is the other half of the sum. Your gold should go on a digital scale that you can see, showing the weight in grams as it happens. Before your gold is placed on it, the scale should show zero — if it does not, the weight it gives you will be wrong from the start.
Watch the scale the way you watch the karatmeter: not from across the counter, but close enough to read the number yourself. A shop that keeps the scale angled away, or weighs your gold out of your sightline, is asking you to trust a number you cannot check.
Will the shop write down the calculation?
Purity, weight and the day's rate together decide what a piece is worth — you can see today's published rate on our gold rate page, though the figure for your piece is only worked out once it is tested at the counter. What matters here is not the number itself but whether the shop shows its working.
Ask for the calculation in writing — purity tested, weight in grams, rate applied — even if it is just on a slip of paper. A shop that says the total out loud and expects you to accept it is skipping the one step that lets you check their arithmetic. If you want to see how this process runs before you come in, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and ask.
Why does a legitimate buyer ask for ID?
A gold buyer asking for your ID — usually Aadhaar or PAN — is normal, not suspicious. It is how a shop keeps a record of who sold what, which protects you if a question ever comes up later, and it is part of how a legitimate business is required to operate. A shop that does not ask for any ID at all is one worth being cautious about, not one that is doing you a favour.
This is separate from having the original purchase bill. Most people selling purana sona — old jewellery, often years or decades old — no longer have the bill, and that does not stop a sale. We have written about that separately in selling gold without a bill.
What if a shop fails one of these checks?
You do not need to argue about it. If the karatmeter is turned away, the scale is out of sight, the total is only spoken, or nobody asks for ID, say you will think about it and leave. A shop with a straightforward process will not mind you watching closely — that is the whole point of watching. If you are comparing more than one shop and getting different answers to the same gold, that is also worth understanding before you decide; we cover why that happens in why two shops quote different rates.
If you are searching gold bechna hai near me or sell gold near me and weighing a few options in Noida and Noida Extension, run each shop through the same four checks. It takes a few minutes and tells you more than any sign on the wall. For Hindi-language notes on how the process works, see gold bechna hai.
Questions people ask
How can I check if a gold buyer is testing my gold correctly? Ask them to run your gold on a karatmeter with the screen turned toward you, so you see the purity reading yourself, at the same time they do, instead of being told a number afterward.
Is it normal for a gold buyer to ask for ID before buying? Yes — asking for ID such as Aadhaar or PAN is standard practice for a gold buying transaction and is part of keeping a proper record of the sale, not a sign of anything unusual.
What should I do if a shop will not show me the scale or the calculation? Treat it as a reason to compare elsewhere rather than proceed. You can also call or WhatsApp 9217742656 to ask how our counter process works — the karatmeter reading, the weighing, and the written total — before you decide where to go.
