Gold buyer near me: why the weight reads less

Selling gold in Greater Noida West? Ask us about your piece before you decide.
Call 9217742656WhatsAppA gold buyer near me weighs only the gold, so a 10 gram set with stones and meena can read 8.4 grams on the counter scale. The stones, enamel, dirt and non-gold parts come off first, and you can watch each step. We are at Cash for gold - Sona Do Paise Lo, in Noida Extension (Greater Noida West), and pickups cover Delhi NCR.
Why does my gold weigh less at the shop than at home?
Your kitchen or jeweller's scale weighs everything in the piece. That means gold, stones, enamel, lac filling, dirt and any steel spring or screw. A buyer pays for gold only, so the buyer weighs gold only.
This is the moment where most arguments start. The seller remembers 10 grams from the original bill. The scale shows less. It feels as if something was taken. Usually nothing was taken. The number simply describes a different thing: the bill weight counts the whole piece, and the payout weight counts the gold in it.
Here is an example, not a promise. A heavy set might weigh 10 grams whole. Stones and meena might account for 0.9 gram. Lac and dirt packed inside hollow parts might be 0.4 gram. A steel spring and screw in a clasp might be 0.3 gram. That leaves 8.4 grams of gold. Your own piece will be different, and that is why it is weighed fresh each time.
What exactly comes off before weighing?
Five things, most often:
- Stones. Coloured stones and glass settings are heavier than they look. They are removed, or their weight is subtracted. We do not buy the stones themselves. Only the gold is bought.
- Meena (enamel). The coloured coating on the back of bridal and Rajasthani pieces is not gold. It adds weight but not value.
- Lac. Many hollow bangles and jhumkas are filled with lac to hold their shape. It can weigh more than you expect.
- Clasps, springs and screws. The fastenings are often steel. Some are gold-coloured but not gold.
- Dirt and solder. Years of skin oil, powder and dust collect in the carving. Old repair solder is a lower purity than the piece and is accounted for.
If you want the longer explanation of each part, it is in Stones, meena and clasps: the parts that are not gold. This post is about what to do at the counter.
Is this just a way to pay me less?
It can be, at the wrong shop. So do not take our word for it. Take the check.
A fair buyer lets you see every step. A buyer who takes your piece into a back room and returns with a number has shown you nothing. When you ask a gold buyer near me how the weight was reached, the answer should come with the scale in front of you.
Here is what you can ask for, at any shop:
- Weigh the whole piece first, out loud. That number should match what you expect from home, give or take a little.
- See the removal. Stones should be popped out or their weight stated. Enamel and lac should be named.
- Weigh the gold alone. The scale display should be facing you.
- Ask for both numbers in writing or on your phone. The whole weight and the gold weight. The gap between them should make sense when you look at the piece.
If any step is refused, you can pick up your gold and leave. Nothing has to happen today.
How do I watch it happen at the counter?
At our counter the scale display faces you. You see the whole piece weighed. Then you see the stones and non-gold parts removed or noted, one by one, and the gold weighed on its own.
After that we test the purity on a karatmeter while you watch. You can read how that works in How a karatmeter reading is taken, step by step. Weight and purity are two separate inputs. Together with the day's rate, they decide the figure, and that figure is worked out at the counter once your piece is tested. We do not quote one before.
If you cannot come in, a home pickup follows the same steps at your door. The scale is brought to you and the same checks apply. See Is it safe to sell gold to a buyer who comes to your home? for what to look for.
What can I do at home before I go?
A little preparation takes the surprise out of the day.
- Look at the piece. Count the stones. Find the enamel on the back. Open any hollow bangle and look for lac. This tells you roughly where the gap will be.
- Find the old bill if you have it. Its weight is usually the whole-piece weight. It will not match the gold weight, and that is normal. No bill is fine too. See Selling gold when you do not have the original bill.
- Weigh it on your own scale. Write the number down. You are checking the first step at the counter, not the last.
- Do not scrub or clean it hard. Dirt is accounted for. Harsh polishing can scratch the piece and does not change the payout.
- Do not remove stones yourself. You can damage the setting or lose gold. Let it be done in front of you.
Selling old gold, or purana sona, for the first time can feel like walking into a test. It is not one. You are allowed to ask every question here. For Hindi speakers, the page Gold bechna hai has the same steps in Hinglish.
Should I get a second opinion on the weight?
Yes, if you feel unsure. It costs you an hour. Two shops should give you whole-piece weights within a hair of each other, since scales are checked and the pieces are the same. If one shop says 8.4 grams of gold and another says 7.2, ask the second one to show the removal step. A large gap usually points to how much was taken off, not to the scale.
How to compare is covered in Should you get a second quote before you sell your gold? and in Why two shops quote you different rates on the same gold.
If you are choosing a gold buyer near me and want to talk before you travel, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and ask how the weighing is done. You can also read about selling in Noida Extension or the cash for gold page for Greater Noida West first. If you are not ready, take your time. The gold does not change while you think.
What if the weight gap still feels wrong?
Ask to see the removed parts. Stones, enamel flakes and lac can be placed in front of you. If the gap still cannot be explained, you can stop and take everything back. A good gold buyer near me will not argue about that.
If the piece is a plain chain or a plain coin-like item with no stones or enamel, the gap should be very small. A large gap on a plain piece is a reason to ask more questions, and a reason to try another counter.
Questions people ask
Why does my gold weigh less at the buyer's shop? The buyer weighs only the gold. Stones, meena, lac, steel clasps, dirt and old solder are taken off or subtracted first, so the number is lower than the whole piece on your scale.
Can I watch the weighing? Yes. At our counter the scale faces you, and you see the whole piece weighed and then the gold alone. Any buyer who will not show you the display is worth leaving.
Who can I ask before I travel? Call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and describe the piece: stones, enamel, hollow parts. We can tell you which parts will come off. The final weight and figure are worked out at the counter.
