The gold rate changes every day because four separate things move it, not one shop's decision. The international price of gold, quoted in dollars, sets the base. The rupee's exchange rate against the dollar decides what that price costs in India. Import duty and taxes are added on top by the government, the same for every buyer in the country. And local demand around festivals and weddings pushes the number up or down within that range. If you are checking rates from Noida Extension or anywhere in Greater Noida West before you sell, today's actual figure lives on the gold rate page — this post explains why it never sits still.

What sets the international price of gold?

Gold trades on a global market, in dollars, all day. The price you see quoted as "international spot" reflects what large buyers and sellers — central banks, funds, bullion dealers — are paying right now, somewhere between Zurich, London and New York. It moves on things that have nothing to do with India: US interest rate decisions, how nervous investors are about the dollar, and how much gold central banks are buying or selling as reserves. When gold feels risky elsewhere to hold cash, more buyers move into it and the price rises. None of this is set by any shop, in Noida or anywhere else. Every buyer in the country starts from the same international number on a given morning.

Why does the rupee-dollar rate matter for gold in Noida?

India does not mine enough gold to meet demand, so most of it is imported, priced in dollars. That means the rupee's exchange rate sits directly between the international price and what you see quoted locally. If the international price is unchanged but the rupee weakens against the dollar, gold gets more expensive in rupee terms anyway — importers are paying more dollars' worth of rupees for the same gold. This is why the local rate can move on a day when the international price barely changes: the currency did the moving. It is also one reason two shops on the same road can be a day apart on the number if one hasn't updated since the rupee shifted.

Does import duty change what you're quoted?

Yes. The government sets import duty and other taxes on gold coming into the country, and these are added to the landed cost before any shop sees it. A change in duty, usually announced in the budget or through a separate notification, moves the base price for every buyer at once — it is not something a local shop chooses or negotiates. When duty goes up or down, you will usually see the published rate shift within a day or two, everywhere, not just in Greater Noida West.

Why do rates move around festivals and weddings?

This is the part that is genuinely local, and it works differently from the first three. Around Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya and through the wedding season, buying of 22 karat jewellery rises sharply across North India. That demand does not usually change the international spot price by much on its own, but it changes how tightly buyers price against it — premiums can firm up when everyone wants to buy at once, and sellers may find shops less inclined to negotiate on the day's number when footfall is high. If you are selling rather than buying, this matters less: you are not competing for stock, and a buyer testing your piece on a karatmeter cares about its purity and weight, not the calendar. There is no good reason to time a sale around a festival either way.

Where do I check today's number, and does it decide what I get?

The published rate — the one on the news, on jewellers' boards, on our gold rate page — is the reference point, not your payout. It is quoted per gram for 24 karat or 22 karat (often written as 916 for 22k), and your actual piece is priced against it only after it is tested: karat purity read on a karatmeter while you watch, weight taken on a calibrated scale, and any stones or fittings set aside since we deal in gold only, not the stones in it. We've written more on why the published rate is not your payout if you want the mechanics of that step. If you'd rather just ask someone directly what today's number means for a specific piece, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and describe what you have — karat, rough weight, whether it has stones — and you'll get a straight answer before you travel.

Questions people ask

Why is the gold rate different every day? Because it is built from the international spot price in dollars, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and import duty, all of which move independently — a shop's rate simply passes those changes through.

Does the gold rate go up during Diwali or wedding season? Local demand for 22 karat jewellery rises then, which can firm up premiums, but it does not change the international price much on its own; today's actual figure is always on /gold-rate-today.

Will I get a better rate if I sell on a specific day? No single day is reliably better — the rate reacts to global and currency moves you cannot predict, so it is more useful to check the current number when you are actually ready to sell than to wait for a "good day".
