None of that changes the price. What changes the price is what the piece is actually made of: how much of it is real gold, what purity it tests at, and what has been added to it — stones, solder, plating, or metal that is not gold at all. At our shop in Noida Extension / Greater Noida West we test every piece of purana sona the same way regardless of how old or new it looks, and we also arrange pickups across Delhi NCR for people who cannot make the trip.
Does an old or out-of-fashion design get a lower rate?
No. Fashion, wear, scratches and age have no line item in the price. A karatmeter reads the metal, not the calendar. A bangle from your mother's wedding and a chain bought last month are tested on the same machine, in front of you, the same way.
What people usually mean when they ask this is: will an old piece be treated with suspicion, or priced down because it looks used? It will not be priced down for looking used. It will simply be weighed and tested like anything else that comes to the counter. If you want to see how that reading actually works, step by step, that is covered in how a karatmeter reading is taken.
What actually changes the price?
Four things change what a piece is worth, and none of them are its age.
- Purity. A piece stamped 916 is 22 karat gold. Lower-purity pieces contain more of another metal, usually copper or silver, mixed in to make the jewellery harder to work. That mix is what a karatmeter measures.
- Stones. We do not buy, test, or value stones of any kind. If a piece has stones set into it, their weight is not counted as gold weight, and they are removed or set aside before the piece is weighed.
- Solder. Almost every piece of jewellery has some solder in the joints, clasps, or repairs. Solder is usually a lower-purity mix used to join gold, and a heavily soldered or repaired piece can test lower than the rest of the same item.
- Plating. A piece that looks like gold on the surface but is plated over a base metal is not gold underneath. A karatmeter will show this quickly, because it reads what the metal actually is, not what it looks like.
Purity and weight are the two numbers that go into the price. The rate for the day is the third. None of the three depend on how old the piece is.
Why do solder and plating matter more than age?
Because they change what is actually in your hand. An old chain that is pure 22 karat gold all the way through is worth exactly what its weight and purity say it is worth, no matter how many years it has been worn. A newer-looking piece with heavy solder at every joint, or a thin gold layer over another metal, is not the same thing even if it looks brighter and newer at first glance.
This is also why two pieces that look almost identical can test differently. One may be a single casting in one purity. The other may have been repaired, resized, or joined from more than one piece over the years, with solder added each time. The karatmeter does not guess at this — it reads the metal while you watch, which is the only way to know for certain what a piece contains.
What about broken pieces or gold with stones?
Broken chains, single earrings, and pieces missing a clasp are tested the same way as anything whole. Breakage does not lower the rate on the gold itself — it is still gold, still weighed and tested the same way. If you want more detail on that specific case, see what broken pieces and single earrings are worth.
Pieces with stones are weighed after the stones are accounted for, since we only deal in gold. If you are unsure what is set into an old piece, or whether it is solid gold at all, bring it in and let the karatmeter answer that instead of guessing at home. If you would rather talk it through first, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and describe the piece before you make the trip.
Questions people ask
Does gold lose value with age? No. Gold does not wear out or lose purity by sitting in a locker for years. Its value depends on weight, purity, and the day's rate, not on how long you have owned it.
Do old-fashioned or heavy traditional designs get a lower rate? No. Design and style are not part of the price. A karatmeter tests the metal itself, so an heirloom bangle is priced the same way as a modern chain of the same purity and weight.
Will a shop pay less for gold that has stones or is plated? Stones are not bought and their weight is not counted as gold. Plated pieces test as whatever base metal is underneath, not as gold, which is why the karatmeter reading is done in front of you before any number is discussed — call or WhatsApp 9217742656 if you want to ask about a specific piece first.
