A karatmeter reads the metal itself — its actual purity — not any stamp on it, so jewellery with no hallmark, no 916 mark, and no maker's stamp tests exactly the same way as jewellery that carries one. This comes up all the time with older pieces, jewellery made by a family or local goldsmith, and gold bought long before hallmarking was common.
At our counter in Noida Extension / Greater Noida West, unmarked purana sona comes in every week, and it tests and prices no differently from a stamped piece. Pickups cover Delhi NCR as well, for anyone who would rather not carry gold across the city to sell it.
Why does gold carry a hallmark in the first place?
A hallmark or a 916 stamp is a claim about purity, put on the piece by whoever made or sold it — a goldsmith, a jeweller, or BIS itself. It is useful when it is there, because it tells a buyer what to expect before any testing starts. But it is still a claim, not the metal. We have written separately about what the 916 mark means and how to read the other marks; this post is about the gold that has none of those marks at all.
How do you test gold that has no mark on it?
The karatmeter does not read a stamp. It reads the metal, the actual gold content of the piece in front of it, the same way for a plain gold band with no mark as for a hallmarked chain. We test your gold on the karatmeter while you watch, so the reading is not something you are asked to take on faith. The piece is also weighed separately, and that weight, combined with the tested purity and the day's rate, is what the counter figure is built from. How a karatmeter reading is taken, step by step walks through what that testing actually looks like.
Why do so many old pieces have no hallmark?
Hallmarking is a fairly recent habit for most Indian households. A ring passed down from a grandmother, a chain bought from a local goldsmith years ago, or jewellery bought outside India often carries no mark at all, simply because marking was not the practice at the time or place it was made. That is not evidence of anything about the gold itself; it only means nobody sent that particular piece for a stamp. The same is often true for pieces bought without a bill; if that is your situation too, selling gold when you do not have the original bill covers it separately.
Does missing a hallmark bring the price down?
No, not on its own. The price a piece fetches comes from its tested purity, its weight, and the day's rate, not from whether it carries a stamp. A hallmark is treated as a claim to check rather than a result to trust outright, so a stamped piece is tested on the karatmeter as well. What BIS hallmarking proves, and what it does not goes into that distinction in more detail. Once a piece is tested, the actual purity is what the counter works from either way. For how the day's rate itself gets set, see gold rate today and why the published rate is not your payout.
Questions people ask
Can a karatmeter test gold that has no hallmark? Yes. The karatmeter reads the metal itself, not any stamp, so unmarked gold is tested exactly the same way as gold with a 916 mark or a full hallmark.
Will unmarked gold sell for less than hallmarked gold? No, not because it is unmarked. The price follows the tested purity, the weight, and the day's rate; a mark only saves a step, it does not change what the metal is worth.
Where can I get unmarked gold tested near Noida Extension? Bring the piece to the counter and it is tested on the karatmeter while you watch. Call or WhatsApp 9217742656 if you want to check hours or ask what to bring before you come in.
