Gold bechna hai and you have no bill? You can still sell. A buyer needs one original photo ID of the person who owns the gold, and a karatmeter test of the piece itself. A bill is useful to have, but it is not what decides the sale.

We are in Noida Extension (Greater Noida West), and pickups cover Delhi NCR. This post is for you if you hold purana sona with no bill and a hallmark that is worn or missing, and you are deciding whether to go at all. Nothing has to happen today. Read this first, then decide.

Gold bechna hai but there is no bill: should you go?

Yes, in most cases. Most old jewellery in Indian homes has no bill. It was bought years ago, or given at a wedding, or made by a local sunar who wrote nothing down. Buyers who sell-on gold see this every day.

The bill tells a buyer what someone paid in the past. It does not tell the buyer what is in your hand today. Only a test does that.

You should hold off only in two cases:

  • the gold is pledged with a bank, a finance company or a pawnbroker
  • the owner has died and the family has not yet agreed who will sell

Both are covered below. For everything else, the answer is to go and have it tested. Testing costs you nothing, and you can walk out without selling.

What does a buyer need if I have no bill?

One original photo ID of the owner. That is the whole list. Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID all work as a photo ID. A photocopy or a phone photo does not.

The owner means the person whose gold it is, and that person should be the one who comes. If you want to know why a shop asks, read why a gold buyer asks for your photo ID. If your ID is at home or lost, read what happens if you do not have your ID with you.

Also bring:

  • the gold itself, in a small bag you keep close
  • any old papers you do happen to have, even a torn slip
  • a phone with charge, so you can call us on the way

Papers are a help, not a condition. Our longer list is in what to bring when you come to sell gold.

What does the karatmeter do that a bill cannot?

A bill is paper from another day. The karatmeter reads the metal you are holding now.

The shop tests your gold on a karatmeter while you watch. The reading gives the purity of that piece, for example whether it is close to 22 karat or lower. Purity, weight and the rate on the day are the inputs. The figure for your piece is worked out at the counter once it is tested, not before.

This is why a missing bill does not hurt the result. If a bill says 22 karat and the piece reads lower, the reading is what counts. If a bill is missing and the piece reads 22 karat, the reading is still what counts. Either way, the meter is the same for everyone. The steps are in how a karatmeter reading is taken.

My hallmark is worn or missing. Does that stop the sale?

No. Rubbing, polishing and repair all wear off marks over the years. Some older pieces never had a mark. A stamp can also be wrong, so a buyer who only trusts the stamp is trusting something that has not been checked.

The karatmeter reads the metal and does not need the stamp. If a stamp is there, it is compared with the reading. If there is none, the reading is enough. More on this in selling gold that has no hallmark or stamp and what a karat stamp does not tell you.

Which pieces need a pledge release first?

If you took a loan against the gold, the lender holds it or holds a claim on it. You cannot sell it until the loan is cleared and the gold is released to you. This applies to gold loans from banks, finance companies and local pawnbrokers.

What to do:

  1. Ask the lender for the amount needed to close the loan.
  2. Clear it and collect the gold along with the lender's closing receipt.
  3. Then come for the test.

If you are short of money for this step, you can call us before paying anything. We can tell you what happens at the counter, so you know what to expect before you go to the lender. We will not ask you to decide anything on the phone.

What if the gold belonged to someone who has died?

Inherited pieces are common, and they are sold often. The care is about agreement inside the family, not about a bill.

  • Find out who the legal heirs are. A spouse, children and sometimes other family members may all have a claim.
  • Agree among yourselves before anyone goes to a shop. Disputes later are harder than a conversation now.
  • The person who comes to sell should bring their own original photo ID.
  • Tell the buyer plainly that the gold was inherited. Nobody will think less of you.

Because every family is different, call us first and describe your situation. We will tell you what we would need to see, so you do not make a wasted trip. The full picture is in selling jewellery you inherited.

What will happen when I get there?

The visit is short and plain.

  1. Your gold is weighed in front of you.
  2. It is tested on the karatmeter while you watch.
  3. You are told the purity reading, the weight and the rate in use that day.
  4. You are given the figure worked out from those three.
  5. You say yes or no. If no, you take your gold and leave. That is allowed.

If the piece has stones, meena or a clasp that is not gold, those parts are not counted as gold. We explain that in stones, meena and clasps. The full walkthrough is in what actually happens when you walk into a gold shop.

Can I sell without leaving home?

In some cases, yes, if you are in Delhi NCR. A pickup follows the same steps as the counter, with the same test. If you are deciding between the two, read is a home pickup the same as the counter. If you want to see the counter first, the details are on our Noida Extension page and our cash for gold page for Greater Noida West. If you live in Noida, see selling gold in Noida.

For Hindi-first readers, there is a page written for this on gold bechna hai. You can also read gold bechna hai: pehle yeh teen sawaal poochein before you step out.

Should you go, or wait?

Go if the gold is yours, is not pledged, and you have one original photo ID. Wait if it is pledged, or if the family has not agreed. Waiting costs nothing, and nothing in this post asks you to decide today.

Questions people ask

Can I sell gold without a bill? Yes. A buyer needs one original photo ID of the owner and a test of the gold. The karatmeter reads the purity of the piece, so a bill is not required.

Can I sell gold if the hallmark is worn off? Yes. The karatmeter reads the metal, not the stamp. A worn or missing hallmark does not stop a sale.

Can I sell gold that is pledged with a bank? Not until the loan is cleared and the gold is released to you. After that you can sell it like any other piece. You can call or WhatsApp 9217742656 to ask what to expect before you go to the lender.

Can I sell gold from a parent who has died? Often yes, once the family agrees who the heirs are and the seller brings their own original photo ID. Tell the buyer that the piece was inherited.
