You can get cash for gold without a bill. Most old jewellery has no bill, and buyers do not need one to test, weigh and price it. What a buyer needs is your photo ID and a karatmeter reading taken in front of you.

We are Cash for Gold - Sona Do Paise Lo, in Noida Extension (Greater Noida West), and our pickups cover Delhi NCR. This post is for you if your gold has no paper and you are wondering whether that is a problem. Mostly, it is not.

Can I sell gold without a bill?

Yes. The bill records where and when someone bought a piece. It says nothing about what the piece is made of today.

Think about where your gold came from. A wedding set bought by your mother. A chain from a family jeweller who wrote the amount in a notebook. A gift. Few people keep bills for these, and a buyer who expects one is asking for something almost nobody has.

We have written a longer post on this: Selling gold when you do not have the original bill. Hindi mein padhna ho to Gold bechna hai par bill nahi hai: kya karein covers the same ground. Here we stay on the decision: what changes when there is no bill, and what does not.

What does a buyer need instead of a bill?

Two things.

That is all. If a buyer asks for more paper than this before testing your gold, ask why.

What does a missing bill not change?

It changes nothing about the three things that set your payout:

  1. Purity. The karatmeter reads the metal. A bill from years ago cannot make 18 karat read as 22 karat, and its absence cannot lower a true reading.
  2. Weight. The scale shows the weight in grams, with the piece on it in front of you. Stones and enamel are not gold, so they are not counted. See stones, meena and clasps.
  3. The rate. The rate for the day is the same for a piece with a bill and a piece without one. You can check it yourself on the gold rate page.

So a buyer who offers you less "because there is no bill" is not describing how the numbers work. Purity, weight and rate are the whole calculation. The figure for your piece is worked out at the counter after testing, and you should see each input. The post on the three numbers that decide what you are paid explains how they combine.

Does a hallmark replace the bill?

Not really, and its absence does not matter much either. A BIS mark tells you something, but the buyer still tests the piece, because old marks can be worn, copied or unreliable. If your piece has no mark at all, that is common on old jewellery and it can still be sold. See selling gold that has no hallmark or stamp.

When does paperwork actually matter?

There is one case: when it is unclear that the gold is yours to sell.

Two situations come up most:

  • Gold held by a lender. If your jewellery is pledged for a loan, the lender holds it, or holds a claim on it. Bring the release papers once you have redeemed it. Without them, no careful buyer should take it.
  • Inherited gold with more than one owner. If a parent's jewellery belongs to several siblings, a sale by one person can cause a dispute later. A short written agreement from the family helps. Our post on selling jewellery you inherited covers this.

Notice that neither of these is about the bill. They are about ownership. A purchase bill was never proof of that anyway.

If none of this describes you, you are most likely selling your own gold, and the lack of a bill is not a reason to hold back.

Is it safe to sell without a bill, then?

Safe means you can check each step yourself. With no bill, you rely on what you can see, so look for these:

  • The test happens in front of you, and you can read the result.
  • The weight is shown on the scale before the piece leaves your sight.
  • The buyer explains how the final figure is made, from purity, weight and rate.
  • You can say no after hearing the figure and take your gold back. Nothing has to happen today.

Five questions to ask any buyer before you hand over your gold is a good list to carry with you.

How do I go about it from here?

If you have a piece or two and no bill, the next step is simple. Pick the pieces, find your photo ID, and come to the counter. Take your time. You can get the piece tested and decide afterwards.

Our Noida Extension page shows how to find us. If you are looking for cash for gold in Greater Noida West and would rather have someone come to you, the Greater Noida West page explains pickup. For questions before you decide, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and we will tell you what to bring for your pieces.

Whether you go to us or elsewhere, the same applies. A missing bill is not a discount, and it is not an obstacle. Ask for the reading and the weight, and make the decision once you have them. That is true of any cash for gold sale you are weighing up.

Questions people ask

Can I sell old gold without a bill? Yes. A buyer needs your photo ID and a karatmeter reading of the piece. The bill does not change its purity, weight or the rate for the day.

Will I get less money if I have no bill? No. Payout comes from purity, weight and the day's rate. Whether you have a bill does not enter that calculation.

What if I do not know the karat of my jewellery? You do not need to. The karatmeter tells the purity in front of you. If you want to check before visiting, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and ask what to bring.
